WM Morrison Foodstore - Phase 1 Shields Road

Rokeby Developments, together with Centros Miller, were selected by Newcastle City Council as their private sector partner to implement a £25 million regeneration scheme at Shields Road, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The site assembly required a Compulsory Purchase Order and the Secretary of State confirmed this, enabling a start on site in November 2001.

Rokeby negotiated a 138,000 sq ft retail planning consent, which was to be implemented in three phases. Phase 1 comprising a 68,000 sq ft foodstore, which was forward sold to Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc. Phase 2 was pre-let to Gala Bingo, KFC, Greggs and Norchem. Phase 3 comprising 12,500 sq ft of high street retail accommodation and is currently available.

The foodstore was completed in October 2002 and formally opened by Morrisons on the 18th November 2002.  The final part of Phase 2 will be complete in February 2009.
